Lanterns formed in early 2006 working under the premise that there was no premise. Two years later, with the release of Apocalypse Youth, the band has never sounded so wild and free. Exercising the art of tuneful, yet extremely noisy pop songs, Apocalypse Youth sees Lanterns hitting their true creative peak.
As the opening chords of distortion ring from Apocalypse Youth and the drums build to a sharp climax, there is a genuine feeling of excitement. The four young men of Lanterns do nothing to quell that anticipation across Apocalypse Youth’s triumphant sound. Lanterns washes their songs in waves of glorious feedback. Yet, buried right beneath the surface lay shards of melody that penetrate the listener. With anthemic guitars and powerful, thought-provoking lyrics, Lanterns is a beacon of hope in this crowded musical landscape.
With Apocalypse Youth, Lanterns continues and expands on the tradition of San Diego indie rock. The band is pushing aside any thoughts of genre tags or classifications and instead concentrating on making beautiful noise with a punk rock spirit. The sounds of the apocalypse may actually be upon us. But, who would have thought the end would sound this fascinating?
Lanterns is Lowell Heflin (vocals/guitar), Sean Liljequist (bass), Adam Piddington (guitar) and Loren Hiew (drums). All songs by Lanterns. Apocalypse Youth was recorded by Mike Kamoo at Earthling Studios in San Diego, CA. Apocalypse Youth was self-released by the band on July 19, 2008.
